SENATOR HAWLEY’S VENDETTA AGAINST SUPPORTING IMMIGRANTS
Wednesday, June 11 --- Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent letters to multiple organizations he suspects are funding, in his words, “coordinated protests and riots” and “lawless mob actions” that are currently “engulfing” Los Angeles, CA.
One organization, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), has raised funds from across the country in recent days, in an effort to provide those wrongly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with a range of resources. These resources include legal services for individuals who have been arrested and kidnapped by ICE, as well as information on navigating the legal fields of naturalization and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
The Unión del Barrio describes itself as “an independent political organization dedicated to struggle on behalf of ‘la raza’ living within the current borders of the United States,” and they are “entirely self-financed through membership dues, community contributions, and local fundraising.” They have worked since their founding in 1981 to resist violence against immigrants and to advocate for a society in which immigrants can achieve the American dream.
Also on Hawley’s list is the Party for Socialism and Liberation, a political party that believes in the liberation of American society through socialist reform. The PSL has fought an uphill battle for years within the electoral process, and for good reason. The United States has been driven by capitalist interests both socially and politically since its founding, and it’s easy to see why people like the Missouri senator would want to censure the PSL even further.
According to Hawley's letters, these organizations have “provided logistical support and financial resources to individuals engaged in… disruptive actions.” “Let me be clear,” he says, “bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech. It is aiding and abetting criminal conduct.” The senator does not refer specifically to any sources that have provided him with “credible reporting.” Still, the onus is now upon these organizations to provide his office with financial transactions, internal communications, travel and lodging records, media and public relations strategies, and other documents, starting November 5 of the previous year.
